On the throne of Cassiopeia burns a blue B-type beacon, about 603 light-years away. Its light began traveling around 1423, in the early Renaissance, when Brunelleschi was designing the impossible dome of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence. Its surface comfortably exceeds 10,000 degrees, a cold violent gleam stitched into the seams of the stellar W.

HIP 5361 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is November: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
