It blazes white and bluish in Carina, that grand piece of the old Argo Navis, about 1,173 light years away. Its light began traveling around the 9th century, when Baghdad lived its golden age under the Abbasids and Alfonso II was repopulating Atlantic Galicia. A B-type star, young and vehement, its surface so hot that its light takes on an almost metallic blue. It crosses the southern sky with the poise of flames that carry too much heat inside to fade out anytime soon.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 52487 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
