What is 46 Leonis

46 Leonis is an M-type red giant 694 light-years away, a slow ember inside the body of the Lion. Its surface, far cooler than the Sun's, radiates in reddish tones betraying an aged and immense star. It shares the sky with the region where, every November, the Leonids seem to spring —debris from comet Tempel-Tuttle.

46 Leonis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
