What is Omega Leonis

Omega Leonis is a yellow-white type-F star some 108 light-years away, woven into the head of the Lion not far from brilliant Regulus. Leo is one of the few zodiacal constellations whose pattern truly evokes the creature it depicts: the animal lies in a regal pose, head turned and forepaw extended —a posture already recognised by Sumerian astronomers.

Where it is and when to see it

Omega Leonis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 48° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 58° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 47° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 81° S.

It ranks no. 43 in brightness among the 80 stars of Leo in our catalogue. To find it, start from Regulus, the brightest: it lies about 10° away (a fist at arm's length covers about 10°).
