Cool red starIts story
44 Leonis is a red M-type giant cast more than a thousand light-years away, inside the regal silhouette of the Lion. Its cool surface, deeply orange through binoculars, stands apart from the white giants that dominate the constellation. The light arriving tonight left around the year 1000, at the height of the Middle Ages —even before the Arabic names of most of its bright neighbours were coined.
