What is HIP 47187
It dwells in Antlia, the air pump, another constellation imagined by Lacaille to commemorate 17th-century inventions. An orange K-type star, cooler and older than the Sun, glowing with a contained golden warmth. Its light set out some 312 years ago, when Bartolomeo Cristofori was inventing the first pianoforte in Florence. A warm glint in a southern corner of the sky populated by modest yet meaningful objects.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 47187 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
