What is HIP 46460
Within southern Carina glows a white A-type star 253 light years away. Its light set out when European astronomers were observing in 1761 the transit of Venus to measure more accurately the distance to the Sun. Hotter and more luminous than our own star, it pours forth a sharp, white gleam, without the gold of suns or the red of aged giants.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 46460 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
