In the sail of the ship Argo, within Vela, a yellow G-type star shines 531 light-years away. Its light set out when Erasmus was writing his works and humanism was flourishing in the European universities. It is a distant relative of the Sun in colour and temperature, yet vastly farther away in space. To look at it is to glimpse a cosmic noon that lit other ages, other thoughts, other worlds imagined by Renaissance minds.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 45962 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
