A yellow-white variable of Vela, 2,450 light-years away —already in the depths of the galaxy. Its light set out for us when Aristotle was teaching at the Lyceum and Greek classical culture was at the peak of its intellectual maturity. When that light began its journey, the Library of Alexandria had not yet been built.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 40155 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
