Another of the blue stars in the celestial sail, in Vela. Its light has been travelling for 994 years: it set off when Viking kingdoms were exploring the North Atlantic and the first Christian millennium was giving way to the medieval European realms. A B-class star, intensely hot and far more massive than the Sun, it unfolds the clean blue hue typical of young stars.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 45122 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
