What is HIP 48613
A white star in Vela, the sail of the ancient ship Argo. Its light crossed 302 years to reach our telescopes: it set out when Newton was still publishing editions of his Principia and Peter the Great was modernising Russia from Saint Petersburg. An A-class star, hotter than the Sun, it radiates with a clean white the ancient astronomers associated with the noblest stars in the sky.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 48613 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
