In Volans, the flying fish, a constellation traced by Dutch navigators in the southern sky, a cool red M-class giant shines from some seven hundred and seven light years away. Its current light set off around the year 1318, during the transition from Gothic to early Italian Renaissance. The reddish tone, low surface temperature and enormous volume make it a star very unlike the Sun, despite being no farther than some brilliant neighbours.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 44283 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
