What is Beta Volans

β Volantis watches the southern sky from 108 light-years, set within the small constellation of the Flying Fish charted by Dutch navigators in the sixteenth century. Orange and calm, it is a K giant that has long left its youth behind, spilling warm light over the southern seas. It remains invisible to most of Europe: it belongs to a sky one only learns by crossing the equator.

Beta Volans lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it never rises above the horizon.
From New York it never rises above the horizon.
From Sydney it never sets and culminates about 58° up.

It can be seen from anywhere south of 24° N.
