What is Beta Volans
β Volantis watches the southern sky from 108 light-years, set within the small constellation of the Flying Fish charted by Dutch navigators in the sixteenth century. Orange and calm, it is a K giant that has long left its youth behind, spilling warm light over the southern seas. It remains invisible to most of Europe: it belongs to a sky one only learns by crossing the equator.

Beta Volans lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is April: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
