Copernicus is a yellow star in Cancer 40.3 light-years away, named in honour of the Polish astronomer who placed the Sun —not the Earth— at the centre of the universe. The naming is not ancient but modern: the International Astronomical Union set it in 2014, together with the name Galileo for one of its confirmed planets, in tribute to the pioneers of the scientific revolution.
Where it is and when to see it
Copernicus lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
