What is Asellus Australis

Asellus Australis is «the southern donkey», companion to the northern donkey that grazes beside the manger of Cancer, the cluster Praesepe. Greco-Roman tradition imagined these animals lent to the gods to defeat the Titans. An orange K-class giant 130 light years away, it is a warm gleam in a zodiacal region otherwise faint in lights.

Asellus Australis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
