A hot, blue class B star burns in Vela some five hundred and seventy-six light years away. Its light departed when the Protestant Reformation was sweeping central Europe and the continent was reorganising itself around new ways of believing and printing books. It now crosses a sky that keeps changing hands without altering its geometry.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 41674 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
