What is HIP 49844

Vela once more, this time with an orange K-type star 226 light-years away, a coppery ember in the austral sky. Its light departed around 1800, in the heart of the Industrial Revolution, as Volta was presenting his electric pile in London and opening a new era for energy. It is an exact contemporary of continuous electricity: it arrives now, two long centuries later, at magnitude 5.98.

HIP 49844 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
