Within the southern Vela the sail burns a blue B-type star 1875 light years away. Its light set out around the year 150, when Ptolemy was completing in Alexandria his Almagest, the astronomical catalogue that would dominate science for fourteen centuries. Young, massive and very hot, it pours forth an electric glow typical of stars that live fast and die soon.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 47559 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is March: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
