What is HIP 39527
A very distant yellow G-class star, 1,186 light years away, in the sails of the old ship Argo. The light peering above the southern horizon tonight set off around the year 840, deep in the Abbasid dynasty, when in Baghdad the House of Wisdom was translating Ptolemy and compiling the Almagest in Arabic. Solar-yellow colour, but with the magnitude of a distant giant.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 39527 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
