What is HIP 40344
Another serene orange in Puppis, some 225 light-years away, lodged between the timbers of the sky's ancient ship. Its light set off when the United States was signing its independence and Lavoisier was dismantling the phlogiston theory in his Parisian laboratory. Two centuries later, it remains a warm ember in the middle of the stern.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 40344 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
