What is HIP 40326
It shines in Puppis with the calm orange hue typical of K-type stars whose cores have begun to cool. Its light took roughly 298 years to reach us: it set out while European astronomers were still charting the heavens with newly invented refracting telescopes. Cooler than the Sun yet markedly more luminous, it offers a warm spark to anyone who searches the celestial ship's stern.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 40326 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is February: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
