What is 19 Puppis
19 Puppis is an orange K-type giant settled 177 light-years away, in a southern field thick with young open clusters and dark dust lanes. Its golden light —cooler and older than the Sun's— set out almost two centuries ago. The star sits faintly, near the limit of unaided sight under a clean sky, along the northern edge of a constellation that once belonged to Jason's ship.
Where it is and when to see it
19 Puppis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
