Tureis belongs to Puppis, the Stern of the ancient ship Argo Navis, a constellation so vast that eighteenth-century astronomers had to split it into three. It is a yellow-white F-type star 63 light-years away, mildly variable: its brightness shifts with a slow pulse that only a trained eye detects. Its name comes from the Arabic «Aṭ-Ṭurays», meaning a small shield — a reminder of how every culture has projected its everyday objects onto the sky.
Where it is and when to see it
Tureis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
