What is HIP 39213
In Canis Minor, the small canine companion of the hunter Orion, glints a white A-type star some 308 light-years away. Its light slipped away as the Bourbons were reorganising Spain after the War of Succession and the first encyclopedias began to classify human knowledge. Hotter than the Sun and of a crisp brilliance, it is a pale spark within the modest hound forever following the steps of its hunting master.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 39213 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
