What is 14 Canis Minoris

14 Canis Minoris inhabits the Lesser Dog, the small hound that trails Orion alongside his greater brother. It is an orange K-type giant some 242 light-years away, an already evolved star whose colour betrays a surface cooler and a radius far greater than the Sun's. Its light began travelling around 1784, when William Herschel had just founded modern stellar astronomy with his great reflecting telescope.

14 Canis Minoris lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
