In the discreet Unicorn, neighbour to dazzling Orion, an orange K-class star pulses at 1,199.3 light-years away. Its coppery light set out when the taifa kingdoms were bleeding out across the Iberian Peninsula and Toledo was beginning to translate forgotten Greek treatises from Arabic into Latin. Almost a millennium of voyage to reach a constellation no famous figure invented.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 38253 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
