Behind the Unicorn hides an orange giant whose light took 2,234.2 years to arrive. It set out when the Roman republic was seething under the Gracchi conflict, in the 2nd century BCE. It is a luminous class K star, far brighter than the Sun despite its temperate surface: an orange bonfire whose luminous echo crosses entire eras of human history.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 36388 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
