A blue-white variable in Puppis, distant and scalding. Her light has been travelling 591 years: it broke free in the Renaissance, when Brunelleschi was solving the dome of Florence and Gutenberg was experimenting with the printing press. Variable B stars are rare and bright —their visible pulse reminding us that no star is truly stable, only seemingly so on human time scales.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 37915 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
