In Puppis burns a blue-white B-type star whose light set out around the year 757, in the height of the Tang dynasty, as Li Bai wrote his poems to the moon. Far hotter and more massive than the Sun, its glow is not entirely steady and oscillates in a barely perceptible rhythm. After nearly thirteen centuries, its blue pulse reaches the human eye as a distant echo.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 36981 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
