In Puppis, the Stern of the ancient ship Argo broken into southern constellations, shines a hot, luminous blue star. Its light set out around 1433, deep in the early Renaissance, when Zheng He's Chinese fleet was concluding its seventh voyage through the Indian Ocean. Far more massive and hotter than the Sun, it embodies the violent youth of blue stars.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 35347 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
