Above the Stern of the ship Argo sails a white A-type star, variable, its brightness shifting discreetly over time. Its light travelled close to 465 years to reach here, setting out when Jesuit astronomers were drafting celestial maps in China with European technique and East India Company ships crossed the Pacific. Its faint flicker is the intimate signature of a star that breathes while it journeys.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 35029 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
