What is HIP 34081
Puppis, the stern of the mythical Argo, hosts this discreet white star three hundred and forty-eight light-years away. The light arriving tonight set out around 1677, the year Antonie van Leeuwenhoek first described spermatozoa under his microscope in Delft. A-type, sharp and hot surface, with no ornament beyond the pure white of its spectrum: one of many anonymous stars holding up the outline of the southern ship.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 34081 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
