16 Monocerotis is a blue B-type star in the Unicorn, a modern constellation drawn in the seventeenth century over a region poor in bright stars but rich in open clusters. Its high temperature turns it into a bluish beacon in a discreet stretch of the firmament. Its light crosses more than eight hundred years of interstellar space.
Where it is and when to see it
16 Monocerotis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
