What is HIP 32402
It belongs to Carina, the keel of the ancient ship Argo, one of the richest star-fields of the southern sky. Orange in color and of K class, swollen like a mature giant, it exceeds the Sun many times over in both size and luminosity. Its light took nearly thirteen hundred years to reach us —it set out when the Tang dynasty ruled China and Baghdad had just been founded as capital of the Abbasid caliphate. It shines with that slow serenity of stars that have already left their youth behind.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 32402 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
