What is 30 Geminorum

30 Geminorum is an orange K-type giant burning quietly some 289 light-years away, on the flank of the Twins. Its cool atmosphere —thousands of degrees below the Sun— gives it the amber tone that only small telescopes can resolve. The light now crossing Earth's atmosphere set out while Newton was still publishing his first optical laws; it takes nearly three centuries to arrive and returns each winter among the most visited northern constellations.

30 Geminorum lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January, when it culminates around midnight.

From London it culminates about 52° above the horizon.
From New York it culminates about 63° above the horizon.
From Sydney it culminates about 43° above the horizon.

It can be seen from anywhere north of 77° S.
