In the winter Unicorn burns a blue star whose light set out seven hundred and fifty-three years ago, when Marco Polo was beginning his long journey to the court of Kublai Khan. It is a young sun, several times more massive and far hotter than our own; its surface, close to twenty thousand degrees, lends it a piercing blue-white hue. Faint to the eye, its inner fire is immense. It belongs to that modern constellation, traced during the Renaissance, which still carries the mythic air of medieval bestiaries.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 31583 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is January: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
