What is HIP 30099
In the vast theatre of Orion shines an orange class K star at 593.1 light years. Its light left around 1432, the year Jan van Eyck signed the Ghent Altarpiece of the Mystic Lamb, one of the summits of Flemish art. A surface cooler than the solar one, contained amber, adding a warm note to the stellar cauldron of the most recognisable constellation in the sky.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 30099 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
