What is 63 Orionis
63 Orionis is a yellow G-type star set 1310 light-years away on the outskirts of the Hunter, not far from the field traversed by 66 Orionis. Though it shares the Sun's spectral class, its magnitude 5.67 at such a range reveals a luminosity hundreds of times greater —the mark of an advanced giant. The light reaching us now set out in the 8th century, when Europe was barely compiling its first medieval astronomical treatises.
Where it is and when to see it
63 Orionis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
