In Auriga, the Charioteer of the winter sky, glows a red M-class giant whose light set out over nine hundred years ago, during the First Crusade and the years when Santiago de Compostela's cathedral was rising. Far cooler than the Sun yet immensely larger, it shines in tones of ruby and rust. It is an aged star moving toward the final stages of its life, a reminder that incoming light is always older than any living human story.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 29451 lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
