68 Orionis is a double star made up of two hot B9-type components 832 light-years from the Solar System. Its surface grazes ten thousand kelvin and burns with the crystalline blue-white typical of late B stars. Though it is not among Orion's great beacons, it shares the winter sky with Betelgeuse and Rigel and belongs to the vast association of young stars that populate that region of the Milky Way.
Where it is and when to see it
68 Orionis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
