A hot, powerful B-type star, blue in colour, with a slightly variable brightness —a gentle pulsation revealed only by photometry. When its light first set out for Earth, Europe had barely raised the first mechanical clock worthy of the name.
Where it is and when to see it
36 Aurigae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
