What is HIP 27517

Beneath Orion's feet, Lepus shelters a yellow G-type star about 268 light-years away. Its light set out around 1758, when Charles Messier was chasing comets in Paris and compiling the catalogue that still bears his name. It shares with the Sun the warm murmur of the G spectrum, yet stands farther and a touch brighter, like a tall candle in the neighbouring room.

HIP 27517 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
