Nu Leporis lodges in the small Hare that crouches beneath the feet of Orion, hiding from the hunter and his dogs. A blue type B star some 334 light-years away, it is one of those hot, vibrant suns whose surface temperature is several times the Sun's. Its cold light blends with the surroundings of Orion's winter realm, that region of the sky where the concentration of massive, youthful stars reaches one of its greatest expressions.
Where it is and when to see it
Nu Leporis lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
