What is HIP 28943
In the Hare crouching beneath Orion, some 460 light-years away, gleams this white type A star. Its light set out around 1564, the year Galileo and Shakespeare were born almost together, and Europe prepared to look at the world —and the skies— in a different way. Hotter and more luminous than the Sun, it crosses the northern winter like a small splinter of ice fastened beneath the hunter's feet.
Where it is and when to see it
HIP 28943 lies in the southern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight.
