Arneb
Alp
Highly luminous starIts story
Arneb is the alpha of Lepus, the Hare forever fleeing beneath the feet of Orion. Its name, from the Arabic «Al-Arnab», means precisely «the hare». It is a yellow F-type supergiant 2,219 light-years away: the light seen tonight left its surface deep in classical Antiquity, when Alexander the Great had not yet crossed into Asia. Despite that formidable distance, its colossal size keeps it visible to the naked eye from temperate latitudes.
