What is 38 Orionis

38 Orionis is a white main-sequence star of type A2, also recorded as a double system. Its apparent magnitude of 5.32 places it on the threshold of naked-eye visibility, almost lost among the brilliant stars and trapeziums of the Hunter. Its light has been crossing space for 276 years: it set out when Newton was publishing the Principia.

Where it is and when to see it

38 Orionis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
