23 Orionis is a hot blue B-type star more than 1,550 light-years away, set on the outskirts of one of the sky's most famous stellar nurseries —the Orion OB association, the birthplace of massive stars like its own. Its light departed around the year 470, as the Western Roman Empire was unraveling. It arrives now after crossing the faint interstellar dust that veils the whole Hunter.
Where it is and when to see it
23 Orionis lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
