19 Aurigae is a luminous A-type giant lying over two thousand light-years away, in one of the more densely populated corners of Auriga. Its light, emitted when the Roman Empire had not yet fallen, has been threading its way ever since through the dust of the Perseus Arm. To remain visible at magnitude 5 from such a distance, it must radiate with an intensity thousands of times that of the Sun.
Where it is and when to see it
19 Aurigae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
