14 Aurigae is a white variable star in the Charioteer, about 286 light-years away, set within a multiple system that has long puzzled astronomers with its tangled architecture. The main A-type component pulses gently in brightness on a cycle of just a few hours, a signature trait of Delta Scuti pulsators. It rings like a fine bell in one of the northern corners of the winter sky.
Where it is and when to see it
14 Aurigae lies in the northern celestial hemisphere. It is visible to the naked eye under a dark sky. Its best month of the year is December: the Sun sits at the opposite point of the sky and the star culminates around midnight. How high it climbs above the horizon depends on the latitude you watch from.
